Project ERICA

ERICA Pilot Project Minho (European River and Catchment Database)

The objective of the project is to evaluate the technical and logistical challenges of producing a pan-European digital catchment database at medium resolution (scale approx. 1:250,000). The database will contain mainly the river network and catchment boundaries. The work program consists of (1) solving problems of data aquisition, (2) correction and further processing of the data , (3) design of a meaningful and practical system of coding of catchment areas and (4) application of naming conventions for data sets and features. The database will be used to support the current and future mapping, monitoring and analysis requirements of the European Environment Agency (EEA).

To meet the objectives two pilot catchments have been selected. To ensure that the pilot areas offer a range of potential logistical and technical challenges, transboundary catchments with an area of about 10,000 sq km were choosen. The pilot areas are situated in France/Belgium (river Meuse catchment) and Portugal/Spain (river Minho catchment). The data of the river Minho catchment are processed at University Freiburg.
